Hi there Angela,
I’m so sorry to learn about your mother’s cancer. She is on some powerful chemos. My GF had all of them but not together. I pulled up some information as to why these were selected. All chemos work differently. Here is the info:
, Gemzar (gemcitabine), and Avastin (bevacizumab) are used together as a potent combination therapy primarily for platinum-sensitive recurrent ovarian cancer.
This triplet therapy combines two classic chemotherapy agents with a targeted biological therapy to delay tumor growth and improve survival rates significantly more than chemotherapy alone.
Medical PurposeT his drug combination is most frequently prescribed for cancers of the female reproductive system:Recurrent Ovarian Cancer:
It serves as a standard second-line treatment for epithelial ovarian, fallopian tube, or primary peritoneal cancers that return 6 months or longer after initial platinum-based treatments.
Other Cancers: It is occasionally evaluated or used to treat specific types of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).
How the Drugs Work Together. Each medication attacks the cancer from a different angle:Carboplatin: A platinum-based chemotherapy drug that damages the DNA inside rapidly dividing cancer cells, stopping them from reproducing.
Gemzar,, (gemcitabine): An antimetabolite chemotherapy drug that mimics the building blocks of DNA, tricking cancer cells into absorbing it, which ultimately prevents them from growing and causes cell death.
Avastin (bevacizumab): A targeted monoclonal antibody and angiogenesis inhibitor. It blocks vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), essentially "starving" the tumor by preventing it from forming the new blood vessels it needs to grow and spread.
The Treatment Schedule
According to clinical protocol information from eviQ Oncology Education, this regimen typically follows a structured cycle:
The Combination Phase: The patient receives all three medications through an intravenous (IV) infusion in 21-day or 28-day cycles.
Carboplatin and Avastin are usually given on Day 1, while Gemzar is given on Days 1 and 8. This continues for up to 6 cycles.
The Maintenance Phase: Once chemotherapy wraps up, the patient stops taking Carboplatin and Gemzar but continues receiving Avastin alone as a maintenance therapy every three weeks until the disease changes.
I hope you and your mother are doing well and have family or friends to help support. This is a tough journey, however, there have been several girls who end up with no evidence of disease (NED). Take each day one step at a time.
Sending lots of strength and hugs,
Kaye 🥰
It's completely understandable to want to know what to expect — being a support person through a recurrence is tough, and you're doing a great thing by researching for her.
