Is it safe to use hair dye after chemotherapy for ovarian cancer?

Once hair starts growing back after chemo, it's natural to want to style and color it. However, the timing and safety of using hair dye depends on a few important factors.

Here are some general guidelines to keep in mind:

- Wait for regrowth: Most oncologists recommend waiting until hair has fully grown back before applying dye — usually at least 3–6 months post-chemo
- Scalp sensitivity: Chemo can leave the scalp more sensitive and fragile, making it more reactive to harsh chemicals in dyes
- Skin changes: Dry or irritated skin is common after treatment, so chemical dyes could cause more irritation than usual
- Consider gentler options: Semi-permanent or natural dyes may be less harsh on a recovering scalp

The most important step is to check with your oncologist or dermatologist before using any hair dye. They can advise based on your specific treatment history and current skin and scalp condition.

It's also worth doing a patch test first, even if you've used a dye before — post-chemo skin can react differently than it did before treatment.

Me neither. I’ve just had my fine the day before Chemo in the hope I don’t lose all my hair 🤞

I lived with my gray short hair for about 6 months. Once it started growing more I did color it, even tho I kind of liked the gray. Had no reaction to it
