What is clear cell ovarian cancer at stage 2?

Clear cell carcinoma is a rare subtype of epithelial ovarian cancer. When viewed under a microscope, the cells appear transparent, which is how it got its name.

Stage 2 clear cell ovarian cancer means the cancer started in one or both ovaries or fallopian tubes and has spread to nearby tissues within the pelvis, but hasn't reached lymph nodes or distant organs.

Stage 2 is divided into two substages:

* Stage 2A: Cancer has spread from the ovary to the fallopian tube (or vice versa), or to the uterus
* Stage 2B: Cancer has spread to nearby organs like the intestines, bladder, or rectum

Clear cell carcinoma is more likely to be diagnosed at early stages compared to other ovarian cancers. Between 57% and 81% of clear cell cases are found at stage 1 or stage 2.

Treatment typically starts with surgery to remove as much cancer as possible, followed by chemotherapy. About 66% of people with stage 2 clear cell ovarian cancer live five years or more after diagnosis.

Having endometriosis is associated with a better prognosis for clear cell carcinoma.
